The ALL NEW COMMODORE 64x: something new from "official Commodore"
..is it worth it or not?
I am not sure what to think about projects like this, the ALL NEW COMMODORE 64x.
It is a Linux-based OS also with modern hardware. You have an own “C64”-OS on it, called Commodore64 OS (but again, it is all wrapped around common open-source stuff). It seems to run all emulating goodness out of the box, including PC-games.
The website: says: “The Commodore® 64x Extreme is perfect for day to day applications, people working from home, surfing the web, word processing, playing older PC games and retro gaming.”
There are lots of similar projects like this, like the especially good MiSTer-Project, which I like more, because there are purely FPGA-based, so more accurate in emulation and much more like the original hardware.
The special take on this project is, that the owner of this Kickstarted really have the original Commodore Trademark-rights. So they market this as “the future of Commodore”.
Hm… I don’t know. I like some aspects of the project. The iconic “new take” on the hardware-design and some other nice aspects, like “remember when using computers was just joy”?
But on the other side, it has the feeling of just upselling “just another retro-nostagia toy” to a very loyal community.
What do you think? Feel free to write your comment as an reply to this E-Mail.
Here is an in-depth review of the hardware from Retro Recipes.
